Could you help shape how adults are safeguarded across the East Riding?

The East Riding Safeguarding Adults Board (ERSAB) is looking for members of the local community to become Lay Members – bringing an independent voice, lived experience and community perspective to help shape safeguarding across the region

What is a Lay Member?

A Lay Member is not representing an organisation or profession. Instead, they bring their own experiences, understanding of their community and independent viewpoint to Board discussions.

You do not need previous safeguarding experience. If you care about the wellbeing, safety and rights of adults, training and support will be provided to help you succeed in the role.

What will you do?

As a Lay Member you will:

  • Attend Safeguarding Adults Board meetings.
  • Share the views and experiences of local communities.
  • Help ensure lived experience is reflected in decision-making.
  • Ask questions and provide constructive challenge.
  • Promote openness, inclusion and continuous improvement.
  • Review meeting papers and maintain confidentiality where appropriate.

Who are they looking for?

The Board would like to hear from people who:

  • Have an interest in improving the lives of adults in their community.
  • Can listen to different perspectives and share their own respectfully.
  • Are willing to learn about adult safeguarding.
  • Think independently and ask thoughtful questions.
  • Value equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Can maintain confidentiality when required

People from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, particularly those whose voices are not always represented in public decision-making.

Time commitment and support

The Board meets six times each year, with occasional development sessions, workshops and training opportunities.

Successful applicants will receive:

  • A full induction.
  • Ongoing training and support.
  • Reasonable adjustments where needed to enable participation.
  • £15 per hour, plus reasonable travel expense

Interested?

If you would like to help shape safeguarding across East Riding, send an email outlining:

  • Why you are interested in becoming a Lay Member.
  • What you feel you could bring to the partnership.

Applications should be sent to ersab@eastriding.gov.uk by Friday 21 August 2026. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to attend a short discussion or presentation.

At HEY Smile Foundation, we know that the best decisions are made when communities are involved. This is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to influence how safeguarding services develop and ensure that the experiences of people who use services remain at the heart of decision-making.

If you've ever wanted to use your experience to make a positive difference, this could be the opportunity you've been looking for.
