How Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is marking World Suicide Prevention Day
Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is leading this project in our region and they want to show everyone that talking about difficult feelings, including suicidal thoughts, doesn’t have to be scary. They want to raise awareness about suicide prevention and encourage community involvement in breaking the stigma around discussing suicidal thoughts and mental health.
A recent poll found that only 45% of people feel comfortable talking to family and friends about suicidal thoughts, compared to 74% who said they feel comfortable talking about mental health.
Hull and East Yorkshire Mind want to change this. By talking more openly about suicide, together we can give people the chance to express how they feel and get the support they need. It could even save a life.
Their campaign will highlight the following:
- Myth vs Fact – Dispelling common myths regarding suicide
- The signs that someone may be experiencing suicidal thoughts
- Suicide prevention guidelines
- The Do’s and Don’ts of suicide prevention
- Tips on talking to someone who feels suicidal
- Tips on what to do if you know someone who is suicidal
- Tips on dealing with suicidal thoughts right now
- The local Mental Health Support Line that is available
