Looking for a fun, affordable way to spend quality time together as a family this summer?

Barnardo's is inviting children, young people and their families to take part in its Nature & Nurture Family Sessions – a series of outdoor activities designed to inspire creativity, encourage exploration and help families enjoy the benefits of spending time in nature together.

Delivered at New Pasture Lane Community Centre, Bridlington, the sessions provide a welcoming and supportive environment where families can learn new skills, make memories and enjoy the great outdoors.

What's on offer?

Each session combines nature, creativity and family fun, with activities including:

  • Outdoor exploration
  • Woodland arts and crafts
  • Preparing, cooking and eating lunch together
  • Mindfulness and relaxation
  • Fun games and activities
  • Something for the whole family

This year's programme includes:

  • 22 July – Bird Box Making
  • 29 July – Beach School
  • 5 August – Woodland Adventure & Scavenger Hunt
  • 12 August – Bug Hotels & Mini Beast Hunt
  • 19 August – Clay Sculpting & Tea Light Holder Making
  • 26 August – Stone Painting & Hiding Kindness Rocks

All sessions run from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Who can attend?

The programme is free for children attending an East Riding school who currently receive Free School Meals through the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.

Payable places are also available, meaning more families can enjoy the sessions even if they are not eligible for funded places.

The activities are open to SEND children, young people and families aged 5–16 years, providing an inclusive space where everyone can enjoy learning, playing and spending time together.

Why nature matters

Time outdoors has been shown to benefit both physical and emotional wellbeing. Activities such as exploring woodland, creating nature-inspired crafts and working together as a family can help build confidence, reduce stress, encourage creativity and strengthen family relationships.

These sessions are about much more than simply filling the summer holidays—they're about creating positive experiences, developing new skills and giving families the opportunity to reconnect with each other and the natural world.
