VCSE

A new and inspiring opportunity is launching for young people in Withernsea and the surrounding areas.‘Start Somewhere… in Withernsea’ is a year-long creative human rights programme designed to support young people aged 11–17 to build confidence, develop skills, and explore their future potential.

Delivered through a combination of monthly creative sessions, cultural visits, and real-world work experiences, the programme is particularly aimed at young people who may not otherwise have access to opportunities like this.

What the Programme Offers

At its core, Start Somewhere… in Withernsea provides a structured yet engaging experience across the year, including:

  • Monthly creative sessions (held on Saturdays, 11:15am–3:15pm)
  • Visits to arts and community organisations, giving insight into cultural careers and creative industries
  • A careers day to explore future pathways
  • Two-day work placements, helping young people gain hands-on experience
  • Opportunities to build relationships, try new activities, and discover hidden talents

Sessions are set to take place locally, including venues such as the Meridian Centre, ensuring accessibility for young people in the area.

A Focus on Confidence, Aspirations and Skills

The programme is rooted in a clear set of outcomes designed to support personal growth and future opportunities. Young participants will be supported to develop:

  • Greater self-confidence and self-worth
  • Raised aspirations about themselves and the place they live
  • Employability and leadership skills
  • New creative and artistic abilities
  • Broader cultural awareness and engagement

In addition, the programme introduces young people to important ideas around human rights, including learning about Mary Wollstonecraft and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child—helping them understand their voice, rights, and role in society.

Partnership Working Across the VCSE Sector

The initiative brings together a range of partners across Hull and the wider region, including cultural organisations, creative practitioners, and community groups.

This collaborative approach reflects the strengths of the VCSE sector—connecting young people with diverse opportunities, role models, and support networks that extend beyond the programme itself.
