When the Final Whistle Blows: Domestic Abuse Support During Major Sporting Events
As football fans across the country enjoy the excitement of the World Cup, local services are reminding people that major sporting events can also bring increased risks for some families and households.
Research has consistently shown that incidents of domestic abuse can rise during major sporting tournaments, particularly when emotions are heightened, alcohol is involved, or when a team loses. While most supporters enjoy the game responsibly, for some people frustration, anger, and disappointment can lead to abusive and controlling behaviour behind closed doors.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or background. It is not limited to physical violence and can include:
- Coercive control
- Emotional and psychological abuse
- Financial abuse
- Sexual abuse
- Stalking and harassment
- Threats, intimidation, and isolation
If you are feeling worried about your own safety, concerned about a friend, family member, neighbour, or someone you support, help is available.
