Community organisations across the UK and Ireland have a new opportunity to bring people together this summer, thanks to funding from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The Rowntree Free the Fund Community Grant is now open, offering support for projects that improve outdoor spaces and create meaningful opportunities for community participation.


What Funding Is Available?

There are four grants of up to £10,000 available to organisations delivering impactful summer projects.

The funding is designed to:

  • Improve outdoor community spaces
  • Increase participation in local activities
  • Support wellbeing and social connection
  • Encourage inclusive and accessible engagement

Projects should focus on adults aged 21 to 65, helping people connect, stay active, and make the most of shared spaces.

What Can the Funding Be Used For?

This is a flexible fund aimed at creative, community-led ideas. Eligible projects could include:

  • Transforming or enhancing community gardens or green spaces
  • Running summer arts festivals or creative workshops
  • Delivering sports and physical activity sessions
  • Purchasing equipment for music, theatre, or fitness activities
  • Improving facilities for inclusive and accessible participation

From wheelchair basketball sessions to local gardening initiatives, the fund is open to a wide range of ideas that bring people together outdoors.

Who Can Apply?

The funding is open to a broad range of organisations, including:

  • Registered charities
  • Social enterprises
  • Not-for-profit organisations
  • Hospices
  • Sports clubs
  • Social housing providers

All applicants must be based in the UK or Ireland.

Application deadline: 31 March 2026 (5:00pm)

With a limited number of grants available, early preparation is strongly encouraged.
