VCSE

VCSE organisations operating adventure playgrounds across England have just days left to apply for the Adventure Playground Fund, a significant funding opportunity designed to ease financial pressures and strengthen long-term sustainability for vital community play spaces.

This one-off grant programme offers £20,000 to £50,000 for registered charities and community interest companies (CICs) that run adventure playgrounds encouraging free, child‑led, and open‑access play. With a deadline of 20 March 2026, eligible organisations are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

What the Fund Supports

The Adventure Playground Fund aims to protect and enhance spaces where children can explore, take risks, and develop through play. To be eligible, playgrounds should:

  • Be free of charge and allow children to come and go independently
  • Encourage child-led play, letting children choose how they engage
  • Employ skilled playworkers who facilitate safe yet adventurous experiences
  • Embrace risk as a healthy part of play
  • Offer access to natural outdoor environments

These features reflect the core values of adventure play—helping children build resilience, confidence, and social skills in supportive community settings.

Who Will Be Prioritised

While the fund is open to adventure playgrounds across England, priority will be given to organisations that:

  • Serve low-income communities
  • Are open regularly and consistently provide access
  • Can demonstrate clear funding challenges
  • Have leadership committed to the adventure play model
  • Are exploring sustainable funding approaches for the future
  • Are willing to share learning with the funder and other playgrounds

Although playgrounds in all regions may apply, the fund notes that most grants are expected to go to areas outside London.

Why This Matters for VCSE Organisations

Adventure playgrounds are often lifelines for local families—offering safe, stimulating, and inclusive spaces for children to thrive. Despite their impact, many face ongoing funding pressures due to rising operational costs, limited core funding, and the need to maintain safe play environments.

This fund provides an important opportunity for VCSE organisations to:

  • Address immediate resource pressures
  • Invest in staffing, safety, materials, and operational costs
  • Build financial resilience for the future
  • Strengthen their role at the heart of local communities

With unrestricted and developmental elements, the fund is shaped to support both short-term stability and long-term sustainability.

Deadline Approaching

The closing date for applications is:

? 20 March 2026

VCSE organisations operating adventure playgrounds are encouraged to review the criteria and submit applications promptly to ensure they do not miss out.
