Humberside Police have been notified by Cheshire Police of a new scam involving Amazon and Apple gift cards.

Asda recently reported multiple incidents where customers attempted to use gift cards that were found to have no value, despite being purchased and activated at the tills. It has since been discovered that a scammer has been placing fake cards on display stands. When customers buy these cards and load money onto them, the funds are diverted elsewhere rather than onto the card.

A comparison between genuine and fraudulent cards shows slight differences in appearance. Asda has removed the affected cards from sale and changed its processes. All branches have been alerted, though there are currently no reports from other retailers or confirmation of whether this is part of a wider, nationwide operation.
