A message from the NHS -Why Antibiotics Won’t Help Most Winter Bugs
As winter approaches, lots of seasonal bugs start to spread. Clinical leaders in Humber and North Yorkshire want everyone to know: antibiotics won’t help with most of these illnesses.
Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections. They do not work on viruses like flu or the common cold. Taking antibiotics when you don’t need them can make them less effective in the future when you really do.
So, what can you do if you catch a cold or flu?
- Rest – give your body time to recover.
- Drink plenty of fluids – water is best.
- Ask your local pharmacy about over-the-counter medicines like paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease symptoms.
By using antibiotics responsibly, we can all help fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and keep these medicines working when they’re truly needed.
