Struggling with energy debt? The British Gas Energy Trust (BGET) is accepting applications to help households in England, Scotland, and Wales clear gas/electricity arrears. The Trust is an independent charity funded by British Gas, created to tackle fuel poverty amid the cost-of-living crisis.
What support is available?
BGET currently offers two grant funds for British Gas customers. Grants are credited directly to your energy account (no cash is paid to applicants).
1) Individuals & Families Fund
Clears energy arrears between:
- £50–£1,700 for pre-payment customers
- £250–£1,700 for credit account customers
2) British Gas Energy Support Fund
Clears energy arrears between:
- £50–£2,000 for pre-payment customers
- £250–£2,000 for credit account customers
Who can apply?
- Households in England, Scotland, or Wales
- British Gas customers for the two funds above
- Money advice/guidance within the last 6 months (evidence required)
- Ability to show a sustainable position going forward (budget plan, income checks, etc.)
How does it work?
- Grants are not cash—they credit your energy account directly
- Processing time: typically 4–6 weeks
- Have your arrears statement, proof of account type, and money advice evidence ready
Tips to strengthen your application
- Get recent money advice (within 6 months) and keep proof
- Provide up-to-date arrears statements and confirm if you’re pre-payment or credit
- Show steps toward financial sustainability (budgeting, benefits check, repayment plans)
- Apply promptly in case the portal closes early
