Applications Open Soon

Press release: 14 August 2025 • Applications open: 15 September 2025 • Deadline: 20 October 2025 (noon) — only the first 300 submissions will be accepted for assessment.

The National Garden Scheme, supported by the Julia Rausing Trust, will open applications for its 2026 Community Garden Grants between Monday 15 September and Monday 20 October 2025. These small but impactful grants help community groups, allotments, and charity projects create or improve shared gardening spaces that boost wellbeing, bring neighbours together, and increase access to nature.

Quick facts

  • Awards: £1,500–£5,000 per project.
  • Who can apply: Community groups with a horticultural focus across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Islands.
  • Application window: 15 Sept – 20 Oct 2025 (noon). Only the first 300 submissions will be eligible for assessment — apply early.
  • Decisions notified: April 2026.

What the grants support

Grants fund projects that create or complete a garden, allotment, or similar horticultural space for the benefit of local communities. Previous awards have supported community gardens, allotments, rehabilitation and regeneration projects, gardens designed for mental health and wellbeing, and youth training in horticulture. The scheme particularly welcomes projects that foster diversity and support people with physical or mental disabilities.

Why apply?

  • Small sums can unlock volunteer energy and match funding to deliver visible, local change.
  • Projects increase social connection, improve access to green space, and build practical gardening skills.
  • Funded gardens may go on to feature in the National Garden Scheme, increasing local profile and fundraising opportunities.

Top tips

  • Check eligibility and read the guidance on the NGS website before you begin.
  • Prepare clear community outcomes (wellbeing, inclusion, skills) and basic cost breakdowns.
  • Apply early — only the first 300 applications will be processed for assessment.

How to apply

Guidance and the online application will be available on the National Garden Scheme website from 14 August 2025. When applications open on 15 September, submit your application promptly to ensure it is within the first 300 accepted for assessment. Successful projects will be notified in April 2026.
