Safeguarding Week 2026: Safeguarding is Everyone’s Responsibility
Safeguarding Week 2026 will take place from Monday 15 June to Friday 19 June, bringing together professionals, organisations, volunteers and communities from across Hull, East Riding, York and North Yorkshire to promote safer communities and strengthen safeguarding practice.
Organised by safeguarding partnerships across the region, including the East Riding Safeguarding Adults Board (ERSAB), this year's programme continues the important message that "Safeguarding is Everyone's Responsibility." The week aims to raise awareness, encourage collaboration and help people recognise how they can play a role in keeping children, young people and adults safe.
Why Safeguarding Matters
Safeguarding is about protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights, enabling them to live free from abuse, neglect and exploitation. While safeguarding is often associated with statutory services, it is a responsibility shared by everyone – including charities, community groups, volunteers, faith organisations and local residents.
The VCSE sector plays a crucial role in identifying concerns, supporting vulnerable individuals and creating safe, inclusive environments where people can thrive.
What's Happening During Safeguarding Week?
A wide-ranging programme of free events, workshops and learning opportunities will be available throughout the week, aimed at both professionals and members of the public. Sessions will be delivered both online and in person to make them as accessible as possible.
Topics being explored include:
- Hoarding awareness
- Rough sleeping and outreach support
- Autism and ADHD
- Trauma-informed practice
- Domestic abuse
- Modern slavery
- Adult and child safeguarding
- Multi-agency working and partnership approaches
The programme has been designed to encourage discussion, share best practice and help organisations strengthen their safeguarding knowledge and procedures.
Why This Matters for VCSE Organisations
Many voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations work directly with people who may be vulnerable due to age, disability, mental health challenges, financial hardship, social isolation or other circumstances.
Safeguarding Week offers an opportunity to:
- Refresh safeguarding knowledge and skills
- Learn about emerging safeguarding risks
- Strengthen organisational safeguarding culture
- Build connections with safeguarding professionals and partners
- Access free training and resources
- Ensure volunteers and staff feel confident in recognising and responding to concerns
Whether your organisation delivers activities, provides advice and support, works with families, older people, carers, young people or community groups, safeguarding should remain at the heart of your work.
Working Together to Keep People Safe
The theme of Safeguarding Week highlights the importance of partnership working. Effective safeguarding relies on communities, organisations and public services working together, sharing information appropriately and responding early when concerns arise.
By attending events and engaging with the programme, VCSE organisations can strengthen their understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and contribute to creating safer communities across Hull and East Riding.
