Two important public consultations are currently open across the Humber region, giving residents and organisations the chance to influence how Council Tax funding is set for local policing and fire and rescue services in 2026/27.

Both consultations are a statutory requirement, but more importantly, they are a genuine opportunity for communities, voluntary organisations and residents to have their voices heard before decisions are made.

Below, we’ve summarised the key messages from each consultation and included separate links so you can take part.

Police Funding Consultation – Humberside

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside is seeking views on the policing element of Council Tax for the year ahead.

Key messages:

  • The consultation will help shape the police budget for 2026/27
  • Funding decisions directly affect:
  • Police officer numbers
  • Visible neighbourhood policing
  • Victim support services
  • Community safety initiatives

Public feedback is legally required and will be considered before any final decision. Residents can review the different funding options and what they mean in practice.

Fire & Rescue Funding Consultation – Humber Region

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service is consulting on proposed changes to its Council Tax Precept for 2026/27, which helps fund fire and rescue services across:

  • East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Hull
  • North Lincolnshire
  • North East Lincolnshire

Key messages:

  • Fire and Rescue funding is facing uncertainty due to changes in how government grants will be allocated nationally
  • From 2026/27, a new Local Government Fair Funding Formula may reduce funding
  • Even with a small Council Tax increase, the Service could face:
  • Up to £3 million reduction in funding (around 5%)
  • Or up to £5 million without any increase
  • These pressures may require changes to how services are delivered locally
  • The Service recognises the cost of living impact on households and wants community views before decisions are made

Proposed options include:

  • 2.99% increase – approx. 26p per month on a Band D property
  • 4.85% increase – approx. 42p per month
  • 9.71% increase – approx. 83p per month (would require a referendum)
  • No increase
