Teen Check In - Support for our younger people.
Supporting Young People’s Health and Wellbeing
The summer months are here, and this period can be both exciting and challenging for many young people transitioning after exams or finishing school.
Young people may be making important decisions about their next steps—whether planning for college or university, or moving away from home.
This guide offers an overview of trusted local health and wellbeing services and signposting available across East Riding, including routine NHS vaccinations for young people and sexual health support.
It serves as a valuable resource for those supporting young people preparing to start university, take a gap year, attend festivals, or travel abroad for the first time with friends.
VCSE organisations are encouraged to bookmark this page and share it as a helpful reference for the young people they work with.
School Nurse Drop-Ins
Across the East Riding, the 0-19 Integrated Specialist Public Health Nursing Service (ISPHNS) includes a school nursing team to support and protect young people.
School nurse drop-ins are offered to students in every secondary school across the East Riding.
Young people can also contact the ISPHNS team via the secure and confidential ChatHealth text messaging service.
Parents and carers can contact the ISPHNS team via email: hnf-tr.isphnspoc@nhs.net or call: (01482) 689689.
Moving Away from Home?
It is important to look after health as a young person, especially when moving away from home for the first time. This includes:
- Registering with a local GP
- Registering with a local dentist
- Finding your nearest sexual health service
If, like most students, more weeks of the year are spent at the university address than the family home, registering with a GP near the university as soon as possible is essential.
This ensures access to emergency care if needed and quick access to health services.
Sexual Health
Even if young people do not plan to be sexually active, it is good to be prepared ahead of starting university, college, or moving away from home.
Free contraception and condoms: These are available free for everyone from any GP or family planning clinic.
Conifer offers advice and support regarding sexual health, including contraception, STIs, STI testing (including free postal home test kits), pregnancy worries, and LGBTQ+ health.
If living in the East Riding and Hull area, visit: conifersexhealth.co.uk.
Conifer’s sexual health outreach team also offers a free, confidential, friendly, and non-judgmental service for young people aged 13 to 19 years old.
Young people can call 01482 336397 or text “Reachout” to 61825 for a call back.
The team also offers a virtual online clinic with a nurse on Monday and Thursday evenings.
Anything discussed with a member of their staff will remain confidential, even if under 16, unless there is a concern about harm.
Young Healthy Minds
Safe, trusted signposting is available on the East Riding Young Healthy Minds page.
